This is my third plein air painting with the Christensen Challenge palette and I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. It has prompted me to up-size my panels to 8" x 10" supports and my brushes as well. Now I am using a #6 bristle flat and a #1 bristle flat along with a synthetic #2 round for the occasional detail.

I had about a one hour window to paint yesterday. While driving around near Central Point I spotted this old truck in a dirt parking lot next to an equipment rental place. I started setting up my tripod that I mount my easel on and a guy came out of the shop to see what I was doing. "Are you a surveyor?" "No I'm an artist . . . I wanted to paint a picture of the Semi truck . . .I used to drive one and I like the way they look" I replied. As I attempted to explain why I would want to paint an old truck he stared at me like I was a martian. "Whatever" he said then turned and headed back to work.

I have made a new resolution with my art, I am going to stop rushing things and avoiding detail. This verse and carefully observing the work of artists I admire has convince me to spend more time on my paintings. I usually like to finish a face or figure in detail then just throw in a quick abstract background, but the art I like most isn't like that at all, the complete the whole picture in detail and spend time on developing a composition and getting harmonious colors. I now realize that if I want my art to succeed, laziness will not do.

The Christensen Challenge

After evaluating my landscape paintings and finding it them lacking I decided to try something new, and challenge myself in a whole new way. I am Simplifying my palette and painting with larger brushes. I am using an economical color palette based on the one Scott Christensen uses featuring Pyrrole Red, Cadmium Lemon, Ultramarine Blue, and Titanium White. My plan is to plein air paint with only this palette on small panels using only a #1 and #4 flat bristle brush for 1 month and see how it effects my work. The plan is to do 30 Paintings in 30 days and see how it effects my work. Below is my painting from today.

Today's plein aire study one of the Dutch Bros Coffee stands near my house.

A local entrepreneurial success story Dutch Bros. was founded on February 12, 1992, by brothers Travis and Dane Boersma, in the neighboring town of Grants Pass Oregon. Their first coffee stand was a temporary structure in downtown Grants Pass. Over the next few years, they opened permanent more stands in other parts of the city, including a coffeehouse a few blocks from the original stand. Then they spread throughout Medford and the surrounding area. Now they have stands open in 5 states.

As of 2009 they have served over 23 million cups of coffee, with gross sales of $46 million. They are the largest privately-held drive-thru coffee company in the U.S.

New Studio - New Painting

I recently converted one of the bedrooms in our house into a studio. First I covered the carpet with a layer of 1/4 " Masonite (in order to protect it), then disassembled my studio easel and screwed the mast to the wall. Having a new studio with a massive easel I felt a bit silly working on a 5" x 7" portrait; So I figured it was time to attempt a large painting. Up till now my largest was 12" x 16" but my new painting is 24" x 30" nearly twice that size. The subject is four African boys in their village in a picture taken by my friend Zane. This should be a challenge on multiple fronts so I will keep you all posted as the painting progresses.

A week and a half ago I had the pleasure of attending the Masterpiece Christian Art Confrence in beautiful Greensprings OregonSince this was a three day conference I decided it was worthy of three posts. Day one we had a plein aire demonstration by Mick Mcginty a prolific Illustrator and all around phenomenal artist. A few of us were couageous enough to paing alongside him. My first painting of a cabin was not coming out very well, so I wiped it off and painted this study of an Oak tree right next to the cabin. At 9" x 12" it's the biggest plein aire I have completed and I really like the way it turned out.

My New Setup

Last night I was becoming frustrated with my homemade pochade box. I'm making a serious go at plein air painting but due to the pochade lid and support arms I cannot do much with my palette knife and am often limited in my brush techniques as well. I wanted to buy a different more useful setup but lacked the cash to buy anything. At around midnight last while Jessica was getting ready for bed and I was perusing some sites which sell various pochade and plein aire supplies, I had a bolt of inspiration. I realized I could build something myself! Soon I was disassembling a tripod quick release plate and a table top easel which was sitting around gathering dust. Next I went to work building a prototype out of cardboard and scraps of wood. The duck tape, gorilla glue were flying as I went to work with my drill, razor knife, chop saw. when I got the design right I called it a night. Today I used my cardboard prototype as the model for a wooden palette and shelf. I just finished testing it and it works awesome.

Awhile back I painted a portrait of one of the most unique and powerful preachers I have ever heard, the Reverend Art Katz. After giving the portrait to his family ( he has gone to be with the Lord), someone contacted me wishing to purchase the painting. When I explained that it was no longer in my possession they commissioned me paint another portrait from the same reference photo. My Color Palette

After trying numerous color combination's I have come up with a simple color palette that gives me the full spectrum of color using only 3 tubes of paint; Pyrrole Red, Cadmium Lemon, and Pthalo Blue. All these colors are lightfast and mix well together. I am able to mix virtually any color from this combination. The dark purple you get from Pthalo Blue and Pyrrole Red makes a great substitute for black. I recommend using a limited palette to color mixing and make color harmony easier to achieve.

I am always playing around with my limited primary palette and I decided to try a new red, "Bright Red" from Windsor Newton. I think it works rather well as a non-toxic lightfast substitute for Cadmium Red. So I guess this makes 2 self portraits in a row.

How to Build an Inexpensive Cigar - Pochade Box

Wanting to get out of my studio and enter the world of Plein Aire painting, yet not wanting to lug around my old French Easel I decided to try to build something on my own. If you want to build one you will need to get a large cigar box and the hardware listed at the end of this post.

Because the cigar box cover will be supporting your painting panel, you will need to be able to lock the cover into position at the desired angle.

You can make a support with two small pieces of metal called mending strips, which are easily found in a hardware store. I drilled 2 holes on each side and used two 8-32 screws to mount the mending strips to the box: one on the lid and one on the box. On the inside of the mending strip put a metal washer then a plastic washer then another metal washer together then thread the screw through them before it enters the box This helps it to open and close correctly.

Use the flat-head screw and wing-nut to hold the metal strips together while keeping the lid up at the desired angle. See picture below:

After improving the hinges by switching them out for wing-nuts and mending strips I decided to tape a disposable palette to the bottom and use the bottom of the box as my palette. Then I bought and installed a Tripod Mount and the Mighty Mite Brush Washer Jr both made by Guerrilla Painter. This was the only commercially available tripod mount I could find and at $14.99 it's a great value.

I tried keeping a small homemade brush washer in the bottom right corner of the box, I stuck it down with kneaded eraser but unfortunately the mineral spirits began dissolving the eraser on contact an left a slimy mess behind, it also was taking up too much valuable space on my palette. Short on cash and trying to find a solution I noticed some cans that hadn't been recycled yet. Using tin snips, lineman's pliers, and needle-nose pliers I cut the can down some and bent what was left of the top into a hook capable of holding the solvent cup to the side of the palette. Then I bought a can of tomato paste for 50 cents and made the top of the lid into my hook and used the can to hold brushes.

If you attempt this, which I don't recommend for the hobbyist, wear leather gloves and be EXTREMELY CAREFUL of the sharp edges. You will want to file down or crimp all the sharp edges.

Last of all I carefully cut an 8" long groove in the back of the box and put the last wing-nut and a screw in it to secure the left side of my panel (the other side is held down by the nut that holds my 8-32 screw in place). All told I spent about 30 bucks for a nice starter pochade box. For a slightly different way to build a pochade box visit emptyeasel.com I started with their design and modified it extensively.

Materials List

a large wooden cigar box, one with a recessed cover. The recessed cover allows enough depth for your panel to sit. Many cigar boxes have a flat cover, which won’t work for pochade boxes.

It's 23 degrees outside my nose is numb my toes are numb and I can barely feel my fingers. Why? Because I've been doing some plein aire painting. I did more experimentation on this one, I used some Oil of Spike Lavender as a medium and played with my palette knife quite a bit.

H is for Honest Abraham Lincoln

I have been wanting to do a portrait of Abraham Lincoln for awhile now. I decided a monochromatic study was a great way to start getting to know how him. My friend Jesse Little whose ancestors were neighbors with the Lincolns had this to say . . .

"Abe Lincoln grew up on a farm next to my relatives back east. Our family didn't care much for him because, as recorded in their diaries, he 'read them books too much and didn't work.' They also record that when he was a young boy he was grinding grain in our family's grinding mill and the mule/horse didn't want to go anymore and kicked him in the head. They said Abe was "like he was dead" for 5 days. I've looked for it in the history books but never found mention of it. I have seen copies of the diaries, though. Also, maybe our family didn't like him because my relatives owned slaves at one time."

I got some peppers from my sweet mother in law's garden and just had to paint them. I was originally just going to do three green peppers but I couldn't resist adding in a red one.

I am really starting to enjoy painting more complex compositions. I am starting to get much more comfortable painting from life. I wanted to give a shout out to Carol Marine one of my favorite Daily Painters, it was on her site that I found a great design for building a shadowbox which allows me to set up still life's. I also need to praise the Lord for having me just happen to visit our local fabric store on their last day in their old location, where I was able to get around a hundred bucks of backdrop fabric for six bucks.

This painting was much more challenging than I had anticipated, the gold leaf the paper and the leather were all a challenge for I haven't painted such things before. Another first for me was the layout. I don;t usually break the frame like this. It is a technique used by artists to indicate motion and energy, so since the word is living and powerful, I thought it would be appropriate.

After a period of stagnation I have decided to resume the practice of daily painting. Unlike my portraits I will be painting these from life, in one session. I'll be painting 4 or 5 paintings a week and selling them on Ebay for a $0.99 starting bid. This painting is my first of an alphabet series, I will be painting 26 paintings from A to Z, they will all be painted on 6"x6" Masonite panels.

I've always struggled to use artistic expression as a means to express my faith. I'm not (for doctrinal reasons) comfortable painting a picture of some long haired bearded guy, and calling him Jesus. I feel a little safer painting hands.
