Art Katz Revisited

Awhile back I painted a portrait of one of the most unique and powerful preachers I have ever heard, the Reverend Art Katz. After giving the portrait to his family ( he has gone to be with the Lord), someone contacted me wishing to purchase the painting. When I explained that it was no longer in my possession they commissioned me paint another portrait from the same reference photo. I'm posting the portrait from last December on the left and the one I finished today on the right to show how style and approach to painting has changed over the past few months.

I don't know which was painted first but I do think the portrait on the right shows more depth, more character development, better use of light angles. Austin, you are an outstanding artist and portray the feelings, and depth of feelings (at least it seems like it does) of your subjects.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. The one on the Right is the newer painting.

I'd love to see the reference photo too. I think I prefer the newer painting, but they are both VERY good.

I've had a hard time locating my original reference, a photo of him from a slightly different angle is on his website:

I agree with James and Kathy. If you compare the noses on both portraits, you can see that your newest one has truer form and depth. Great job.

The reference photo for this is so small it is amazing that Austin was able to make a painting out of it. Not an easy task imo.

Art Katz led me to the Lord in 1971...He was the most powerful and persuasive evangelist and teacher I have heard in the 40 years since then. His messages can still be heard at his website:
